HOW TO DO A COMPLETE SKIN ANALYSIS. QUESTIONS TO ASK, ISSUES TO LOOK FOR
I have talked about skincare ingredients and the order of usage of products. I want to take a moment to go back to the beginning. Now that you have learned, and I hope will continue to learn, about the specific features and benefits of some of the most popular ingredients. How do you know which ones are right FOR YOU? What ingredients should you be using on YOUR unique skin? What ingredients should you be looking for in the products you are considering?
First, cleanse your skin with a gentle cleanser and pat dry to get a more accurate assessment of your skin. Then look at your skin in the mirror and ask yourself:
1) Do you see oily, shine? Where? On the forehead? Chin? Everywhere? Then ask, How shiny? The more shine/oil you see, over more facial areas, the more of an OILY SKIN TYPE you have. Look at pore size, the larger the pores appear, the more oil is being released/excreted on the surface.
2) Do you notice any tightness and see flaky areas? The more dryness over more areas of your face (or your complete face) the more you are a "dry" skin type. One of the lucky aspects of dry skin is that the pores are mostly invisible. Another signal your skin is drier is your skin feels rough or uneven to the touch.
A quick test to check for dehydration is to gently pinch your skin. If it bounces back quickly your skin is probably well hydrated.
If you do not notice, or cannot discern, much of a difference in oil or dryness then you are probably a normal skin type. Happy Day!!
If you notice both, oily on the forehead, nose and chin with tight, flaky and dryness on the cheek then you are combination skin type (classic T zone).
3) Let's check elasticity. Another pinch test, but this time specifically pinch the skin in the JAWLINE OR CHEEK. The quicker it snaps back the better elasticity you have. The slower the skin goes back into position.... well I think you know my point here.
This is where many people end the evaluation. However, there are a few more questions I believe need to be included in a through evaluation.
4) Do you have any dark spots? Uneven pigmentation/skin tone?
5) Is your skin easily irritated? Do you feel a warmth, heat, even hotness to your skin? Does your skin turn "red" quickly, easily in general or with use of products?
Last question: What do YOU SEE? What changes, results are YOU LOOKING FOR? What differences would YOU LIKE TO SEE IN THE MIRROR?
Take your time. DO NOT RUSH. The more thorough, detailed, and complete your analysis the better your results will be.
I recommend writing down your findings and comparing them to the features/benefits you are learning about ingredients here.
PUT TOGETHER YOUR SKINCARE EVALUATION AND THE CHANGES (GOALS) YOU WISH TO SEE IN YOUR SKIN WITH THE INGREDIENTS THAT HAVE THOSE SPECIFIC FEATURES/BENEFITS.
With this list of ingredients in hand you are ready to go shopping. You will make better, more educated choices, chose better products for your skin, and achieve your BEST SKIN.
